Where To Stay On Koh Phangan - A Short Area Guide

Where to Stay on Koh Phangan: A Guide for Party People, Peace Seekers & People Who Came for Yoga but Stayed for Pancakes

Koh Phangan is like that friend who’s super spiritual on weekdays and completely unhinged on weekends. It’s world-famous for Full Moon Parties, but there’s so much more. Jungle vibes, beach naps, raw food cafés, and more yoga mats than humans.

But where should you stay? Depends on how much neon paint you want in your life. Let’s break it down, with brutal honesty.

1. Haad Rin – “Party like it's still 2005”

Vibe: Home of the infamous Full Moon Party, and every kind of tourist mistake you can imagine.

Pros:

If you’re here to party, this is Mecca.

Beachfront bars, DJ sets, buckets of joy (and regret).

You won’t need transport as everything you need (or want to forget) is walkable.

Cons:

Loud. Like, “did someone bring a jet engine to the beach?” loud.

The beach is beautiful, until it’s been partied on.

Accommodations range from “just okay” to “this is definitely mold.”

Stay here if: You came to dance, drink, and make questionable tattoo decisions.

2. Baan Tai – “Party-lite, with actual sleep potential”

Vibe: Strategically located between wild and mild. Good if you want fun without full madness.

Pros:

Close enough to Haad Rin to pregame, far enough to sleep.

Great for pre- and post-party chill zones.

Affordable mid-range hotels and beach bars with bean bags.

Cons:

Still a bit loud during peak party seasons.

Beach isn’t the prettiest for swimming.

You may wake up to trance music even if you went to bed at 10.

Stay here if: You want the party without becoming a permanent part of the dance floor.

3. Thong Sala – “The town where errands happen”

Vibe: The main port town. Not glamorous, but full of Thai food, markets, and motorbike rental stalls.

Pros:

Cheap eats, 7-Elevens, and street noodles for days.

Good base if you plan to explore the island on a scooter.

No nonsense. Just pad Thai and ferry tickets.

Cons:

Not much of a beach scene.

Can feel a bit gritty and hectic.

You’re more likely to bump into someone shipping coconuts than sunbathing.

Stay here if: You're a budget traveler, an explorer, or a minimalist who just wants soup and silence.

4. Sri Thanu – “Yoga, spirulina, and suspiciously happy people”

Vibe: Spiritual wellness haven. Wake up, chant, downward dog, smoothie, repeat.

Pros:

Home to yoga schools, vegan cafés, and alternative medicine you didn’t know existed.

Laid-back, beachy, and peaceful.

Great community vibe; everyone’s healing something.

Cons:

You may develop a tofu addiction.

No wild nightlife unless ecstatic dance counts.

Conversation may include phrases like “sacred feminine” or “energetic cleansing.”

Stay here if: You have a yoga mat, a crystal collection, or just want to chill in peace.

5. Haad Yuan / Haad Tien – “Remote, lush, and slightly magical”

Vibe: Jungle beach paradise only accessible by boat or bravery. A secret haven, unless you’re in on the secret.

Pros:

Incredible beaches, no roads, and the jungle soundtrack of your dreams.

Home to The Sanctuary, aka that place people go for yoga detox and end up living at for 3 years.

Feels like a different planet, just with smoothies.

Cons:

Hard to reach. Boats stop when the waves get feisty.

Internet is “meh” at best; great for digital detox, bad for Zoom calls.

You will get bitten by something. Probably everything.

Stay here if: You want jungle luxury, no motorbikes, and deep conversations with strangers named Moonlight.

6. Chaloklum – “Fishermen, families, and actual locals”

Vibe: Quiet northern village where life moves slowly, and so should you.

Pros:

Authentic Thai village charm.

Peaceful beach and calm bay for swimming.

Great seafood and family vibes.

Cons:

Not much happening after dinner (unless you count listening to waves).

Far from the party scene.

Might feel like you’re the only one under 40.

Stay here if: You want peace, simplicity, and grilled squid on demand. Also great for those hiding from debt collectors.

Final Thoughts

Haad Rin = Party animal paradise

Baan Tai = Balanced chaos

Thong Sala = Budget & base camp

Sri Thanu = Yoga cult, but in a good way

Haad Yuan/Tien = Hidden jungle dream

Chaloklum = Low-key local life

Koh Phangan really is a choose-your-own-adventure island. Whether you're doing moon salutations or moon parties, just remember: bring mosquito repellent, never trust a bucket, and always check if that “quiet bungalow” is next to a secret techno bar.
