Epic Isaan Road Trip Itinerary - 3-4 Weeks of Adrenaline-fueled Fun
The Ultimate Isaan Road Trip: Northeast Thailand's Hidden Treasure
Thailand's northeastern region, known as Isaan, remains one of the country's most underrated destinations. Far from the beaches and tourist crowds, Isaan offers authentic culture, spectacular temples, prehistoric sites, and some of Thailand's most distinctive (and spiciest) cuisine. This 24-day road trip circuit will take you through the heart of Isaan, hitting all the major cities while creating a logical route that minimizes backtracking.
Important Note: This road trip can be customized by shortening or lengthening the trip, adding or leaving out destinations, changing the starting and/or finishing point, and by using public transport (think a mix of buses, trains, taxis/, tuk-tuks, vans, songthaews etc.) instead of doing it by car. This is the prefect trip for those who've seen most of the central, northern and southern destinations but have hardly ever set foot in Isaan (northeastern Thailand).

Practical Tips for Your Isaan Road Trip
1. Best Time to Visit: November-February offers the most pleasant temperatures. Avoid March-May (extremely hot) unless you're tough, and be aware of possible flooding during rainy season (June-October).
2. Transportation: Renting a car from Khon Kaen is the most practical option. Main roads between cities are excellent, but a navigation app is essential. However, with a few minor adaptations, this trip is totally doable by public transport.
3. Language: English is less commonly spoken in Isaan than tourist areas. Download a Thai language app and keep key phrases handy. Google Translate us your friend! Beware that many people in Isaan speak the northeast dialect (which is basically Lao, and some speak a Khmer variant).
4. Food: Isaan cuisine is famously spicy! Some must-try dishes include som tam (papaya salad), larb (spicy meat salad), and kai yang (grilled chicken).
5. Accommodations: Major cities have plenty of options, but book ahead for smaller towns. No need to book your whole trip ahead. Keep some room for flexibility as you might want to change plans midway.
6. Cultural Sensitivity: Isaan is more traditional than tourist areas. Dress modestly, especially when visiting temples.
7. Festivals: If possible, time your visit with the Bun Bang Fai (Rocket Festival) in May, the Candle Festival in July, or the Elephant Round-up in Surin (November).
8. Flexibility: Be ready to change your plans if needed. If you're tired, insert an extra rest day. If you're getting bored, speed up or shorten your trip. Festivals might also change your planned route as well as the weather.
This circuit covers approximately 1,500 kilometers of driving (or being driven) but rewards you with experiences few international travelers ever see. You'll discover the soul of Thailand's northeastern region, with its unique blend of Thai, Lao, and Khmer influences.
Final Thoughts
It's highly unlikely that anyone will follow the exact itinerary of this trip and visit all the mentioned attractions. That's actually great! As you go along, you'll get the hang of it and start planning your own side trips, discover other worthwhile sights and become your own trip designers. And that's exactly the objective! Just make sure to enjoy your adventure and don't be afraid to change your plans whenever you feel like it. Before you know it you'll start planning your northern road trip from scratch yourselves!
