Krabi - Amazing, Affordable and Better than Phuket
Krabi: Paradise with a Side of Tourists and Tan Lines
Krabi, the land of limestone cliffs, boat selfies, and sunburns you’ll pretend were worth it.
Krabi is what happens when Mother Nature flexes hard: stunning beaches, towering cliffs, turquoise water, and enough boat tours to make Poseidon cry. It’s less wild than Phuket, less sleepy than the islands, and just chaotic enough to make things interesting. Basically, it’s the Goldilocks of southern Thailand, minus the bears.
How to Get There
By Plane
Krabi International Airport (yes, it’s real) has direct flights from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and sometimes other lucky cities.
Domestic flights: 800–2,000 THB, depending on whether you book early or are emotionally attached to paying extra for baggage.
By Bus
From Bangkok: 12–14 hours, 500–1,000 THB.
Only for the brave, the budget-conscious, or sadomasochists with playlists that last 14 hours.
By Ferry (from nearby islands)
From Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, or Koh Lanta.
Tickets range from 300–800 THB, plus a bonus sunburn and possible existential crisis depending on sea conditions.
Pro tip: Wear the life jacket, you might need it.
Where to Stay
You can either stay in Krabi Town (if you hate beaches), Ao Nang (the main drag) or Railay Beach (the scenic Instagrammer's wet dream).
Budget
Hostels, fan rooms, and bamboo bungalows for 300–700 THB/night. You’ll hear everything your neighbors do, but hey, it’s “part of the experience.”
Mid-Range
Boutique hotels and beach resorts with pools, breakfast buffets, and staff who pretend not to judge your third cocktail before noon. 1,200–2,500 THB/night.
Luxury
Villas, infinity pools, beachfront cabanas with mosquito nets that cost more than your flight. Starting at 3,000 THB/night and up, depending on how much marble you require to feel joy.
What to See
Railay Beach
Accessible only by boat (because drama).
Longtail boat from Ao Nang: 100–150 THB one way
Insane cliffs, white sand, and the occasional rock climber trying to prove something. Bring water, sunscreen, and zero expectations for personal space.
Ao Nang Beach
Main tourist drag. Good for sunsets, street food, and people-watching. Free to roam, unless you count the price of losing a little dignity trying to haggle over the price of a $5 sarong.
Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Sua)
Entry: Free. Regret: Optional.
Climb 1,237 stairs for a view that makes it almost worth the emotional trauma. Pro tip: don’t do it in flip-flops, and definitely don’t feed the monkeys. They’re thieves.
Emerald Pool & Hot Springs
Located about an hour inland.
Entry: 200 THB (Emerald Pool), 160 THB (Hot Springs)
Warm, natural pools in a jungle setting where you can pretend you're in a shampoo commercial. Until 30 other people get in.
What to Do
Island-Hopping Tours
Because being on land is so yesterday.
4 Islands Tour: 400–800 THB (group tour), or 1,500–3,000+ THB (private boat)
Includes Phra Nang Cave, Chicken Island, and sandbars that disappear when you finally get your camera ready.
Kayaking in Ao Thalane or around Railay
Rentals: 300–500 THB per kayak for a half-day
Paddle through mangroves like a peaceful adventurer, until your arms give out and you float backward into a rock.
Snorkeling or Diving
Full-day snorkeling tours: 800–1,500 THB
Diving trips: 3,000–4,500 THB for certified divers
See fish, coral, and occasionally other humans pretending they’re not terrified of sea urchins.
Eat Everything
Street food stalls, seafood BBQs, and banana pancakes cooked on griddles older than you.
Pad Thai: 50–80 THB
Grilled seafood: 100–300 THB depending on your appetite and negotiation skills
Chang beer: 60–90 THB, and a free hangover the next morning
Nightlife
Krabi’s nightlife is more “party lite” than “Phuket chaos,” which is perfect if you like your hangovers with a side of ocean breeze.
Ao Nang Bars
Reggae bars, beach bars, and rooftop spots.
Beers: 60–90 THB
Cocktails: 120–200 THB, depending on how much rum you think belongs in a mojito
Beach fire shows
Usually free if you buy a drink. Occasionally impressive, occasionally terrifying. Do not volunteer unless you're fireproof or just really brave.
Karaoke Bars
They exist. You’ve been warned.
Excursions
Koh Phi Phi (Day Trip)
Overrated but still gorgeous.
Day tours: 1,000–1,800 THB with lunch and snorkeling
You’ll see Maya Bay (from The Beach), and 1,000 other tourists also looking for Leonardo DiCaprio.0
Khao Phanom Bencha National Park
Entry: 200 THB
Hiking, waterfalls, and probably fewer tourists. Worth it if you want some greenery without sand in your socks.
Krabi Town Night Market (Weekends)
Free entry
Food/snack budget: 150–300 THB
Local eats, crafts, live music, and souvenirs you’ll forget you bought until you unpack six months later.
Final Thoughts
Krabi is beautiful, affordable, and just touristy enough to keep things convenient without feeling like a human zoo (looking at you, Phuket). Whether you're into beach bumming, boat hopping, cliff climbing, or just eating grilled squid on a stick, Krabi’s got your back.
Bring sunscreen, sarcasm, and a healthy respect for boat schedules. And remember: the tan will fade, but the awkward photos of you in a life jacket will last forever.
